Biographical Data :

Name :Marwan Ibn Al Hakam
Period :623 - 685
Biographical detail : The first Marwanid caliph of the Ummayad family.

Marwan I seemed to have resigned to accepting Ibn al Zubayr as caliph, till he met ‘Ubayd Ullah bin Ziyad who persuaded him to change his mind. The Kalbi chief ibn Bahdal and Ubaydullah called a meeting at which Marwan was acknowledged as caliph. But the Qaysi tribesmen of the northern part of the country were against this arrangement. The Yamanis of the South who had elected him marched against the Qaysis. The two sides met at Marj Rahit near Damascus and the Yamanis proved victorious. The battle at Marj Rahit in 684 proved disastrous for the Arabs as it divided them into two parties forever.

Qaysi tribes were mostly settled in the northern parts such as Qinnasrin and Jazria, Yamanis tribes were settled in the south around Moms, Palestine and areas to the east of Jordan valley. The Kalbs, Tanukh, Judhans and Taglib belonged to the Yamanis tribes, while Sulaym, Kilab and ‘Uquayl belonged to the Qaysi tribes. As late as the 19th century, battles were still being fought in Palestine between groups, calling themselves Qaysi and Yamanis.
