Chief Abiola was the apparent winner of 1993 presidential elections cancelled by then-dictator Gen. Sani Abacha, who jailed him the following year on charges of treason. Abiola was close to be released by the new military leader, but died of a heart attack in prison.
Chief Abiola was a millionaire-businessman and had emerged as the central personality in Nigeria’s transition to democracy. His death left Nigeria at a crossroads, with a military regime confused about how to proceed with its stated desire to quit politics and the pro-democracy movement without an obvious leader.
Moshood was born in poverty in Abeokuta of Yoruba tribe.
