The head of the Suhrawardy order concentrated in the India-Pakistan sub-continent. Born at Suhraward near Zanjan, he was educated in Baghdad. Ibn Asakir and Imam Fakhruddin Abu Ali Wasti were his disciples. Bahauddin Zakaria Hultani who spread the Suhrawardiya order in India was a disciple of Abu Hafs Umar Shahabuddin Subrawardy who was the nephew of Abu Najib.
He left Suharward for Baghdad and taught for a while at the Nizamiya, then left to associate with Sheikh Ahmad al Ghazali who guided him to the Sufi path. He built Rebat on the Tigris.
Abu Najib Suhrawardy was the author of Adab al Muridin. He was the Murshid of Ismail al Qasri (1209) and Ammar Al
