Shaikh Abdul Rahman al-Iryani guided the early struggle of the Republic of North Yemen. Iryani was one of the key architects of modern Yemen, seeking to meld the conflicting interests of modernists and traditionalists into a workable system of government. Iryani played a major part in drafting the 1970 constitution.
Iryani spent nearly fifteen years in prison during the turbulent history of Yemen. He became minister, vice-president and Prime Minister and President of Yemen. In 1974, he was forced to resign and go into exile to Damascus.
Shaikh Abdul Rahman al-Iryani was born into a family of hereditary judges in the village of Iryan.
