|Biographical detail : || Born near Timbuktu, he was a writer, jurist and leader of western Sudan. He was the author of a biographical dictionary of the Maliki jurists.
When the Sultan of Morocco conquered Timbuktu in 1591, he was accused of rebellion and was deported to Marrakech, but he was allowed to teach and practice law.
He spent his last years in scholarly pursuits. He also wrote a book of Arabic grammar.
