|Biographical detail : ||Nicknamed Gran “the left-handed” who brought major part of Abyssinia into Muslim kingdom of Adal.
Born Ahmed Ibn Ibrahim and known as Gurey to Somalis, he embarked on a conquest that led three-quarters of Abyssinia into Muslim kingdom of Adal and converted many Abyssinians into Islam. After installing his brother as monarch, Gran declared jihad against Christian Ethiopia in conjunction with the help of the Turks. The Ethiopian monarch asked for Portuguese help, but he soundly defeated the Portuguese and Ethiopian combined forces in 1541.
Gran or Gurey as known to Somalis is a widely known hero and there are large body of literature available about him and the kingdom of Adal.
When his Turk allies went back home, he was killed in a battle but before his death he was able to convert most of the Ethiopians into Islam.
