Bayar, as a leader of the democratic party, he advocated liberation, following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire at the end of world War I. He joined Mustafa Kamal Pasha and resisted the allied occupation in 1921. He was minister of finance and minister of reconstruction and settlement in 1992-24. In 1937 he became prime minister but resigned after Ataturk's death in 1939. He organised the Democrat party with Andnan Menderes and others and won 62 seats in the general election of 1946. His party won by an overwhelming majority in 1950 and he was elected president. He was twice re-elected in 1954-1957.
Bayar was arrested after a military coup in 1960, he was sentenced to death in 1961, but due to advance age the sentence was commuted to life imprisonment. Released on health reasons in 1964, he was pardoned in 1966.
