|Biographical detail : ||Televangelist Islamic preacher.
Abdullah Gymnastiar also known as AA Gym (elder bother) is Indonesia’s televangelist Islamic preacher, a household name – he claims an audience of over 80m – who spreads the message of self-control, personal morality, tolerance and faith. The ubiquitous AA Gym, oozing with energy and wearing blazers, turtle necks as well as flowing robes, gives sermons on the practicalities of daily life and advising his followers how to succeed in day to day living.
AA Gym wants to build professionalism and entrepreneurship through Islam. Indonesia, though, is the world’s most populous country and Islam first found a foothold in the archipelago some 700 years ago but from televangelists to text messages sending Quranic verses, Islam appears to be enjoying a resurgence.
AA Gym has set up a service called al-Quran Seluler, which allows Muslims to receive his analysis of the verses from the Qur’an by text message or voicemail. He reaches at least 60 million people weekly through television and radio, not including his books, cassettes, videos, newspaper, management training seminars and aphorisms printed on the red cans of the soft drink he markets, Qolbu Cola.
Abdullah, the former electrical engineer, is an avowed fan of modern life and modern business. He owns a satellite television channel, a radio station, a publishing house, a recording studio, an advertising firm, a travel agency and companies merchandising clothing, mineral water, shampoo, cosmetics, detergent and instant noodles.
AA Gym is sought after by many media channels because his approach is different and he inspires Muslims to advance themselves economically by reminding that the Prophet, peace be upon him, was a businessman himself.
Abdullah Gymnastiar, a boyish figure with round, metal glasses, thick lips and a thin, wispy beard is the eldest son of an army officer.
