Biographical detail : A former French Communist leader, philosopher and convert to Islam.

Served in the French parliament as a Communist deputy and senator, Roger Garaudy was known within his party hierarchy as “the Cardinal” both for his sense of authority and his attraction towards the Church. He was for years the darling of the French media and intellectual milieu for his philosophical work and his political courage.

He taught philosophy at the universities of Clermont-Ferrand and Poitiers and wrote around 70 books, describing himself as a Don Quixote fighting the windmills of capitalism.

Roger Garaudy wrote some of the most influential and informed essays in defence of Muslim civilisation. He converted to Islam in 1982.

He was charged, tried and convicted for writing a semi-Revisionist book, ‘The Founding Myths of Israeli Politics’ and he was fined $50,000 in a French court in 1998.

Born in Marseille into a Catholic family, Roger Garaudy joined the French Communist Party in 1933 while he was a university student. A veteran of the resistance he fought in the Second World War.
