Said was elected president of the Comoros, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean, in 1990 but was ousted by a band of mercenaries in September 1995. French troops ended the coup and reinstalled Said under bilateral accords with Comoros, a former French colony, and captured the mercenaries led by Robert Denard.
Said Muhammad Djohar regarded by many Comorans as the father of democracy in the Comoros had announced his intention to run for office in elections in the spring of 2006.
Said Muhammad Djohar died at his home in Mitsamiouli.
