In 1942 Kashani, General Zahdi and several other officers were alleged to be guilty of conspiracy against the Shah and were sent into exile. In 1950 he returned from exile and was elected to the Majlis (parliament). During the movement to nationalise the Iranian Oil, he sided with Mossadiq.
After the overthrow of the Mossadiq’s government in 1953 General Zahdi became the new prime minister. Kashani was arrested in 1956 for his activities against Zahdi’s government. However, his life was spared due to his old age.
