18 September 2025 Cardiff’s Centre for the Study of Islam – 20 year Anniversary

The lecture hall was packed when the University’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Jason Mohammad, opened an afternoon of celebration to mark 20 years of the Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK. Attendees included the leading academics in the field, researchers and the many well-wishers of the pioneering efforts of its founding director, Professor Sophie Gilliat-Ray OBE. The  Centre stands unique in British academia for  its commitment to base its work on robust academic methodologies, while at the same time fostering a partnership with Muslim communities to address needs and priorities. Both Professor Sophie and Saleem Kidwai OBE, President of the Muslim Council of Wales, affirmed that now, more than ever, such a collaboration remains essential. As noted by Vice Chancellor Professor Wendy Larner on the occasion, the University’s own strategic vision, ‘ Our future, together,’ affirms the aim “to work collaboratively and with a diversity of opinion.”

HM Lord Lieutenant of South Glamorgan, Morfudd Meredith, read out a message of congratulations from King Charles III.

A highlight of the programme was the panel discussion, chaired by Emeritus Professor Tariq Modood, that brought together leading (and legendary) scholars – all associated with the Muslims in Britain Research Network – to reflect on the theme ‘Past, Present and Future of British Muslim Studies’.

Professor Sean McLoughlin provided a video message. A further highlight of the anniversary was a recital by the National Poet of Wales, Hanan Issa, of ‘Where The Two Rivers Meet’, that she had written at the Centre’s request*. In the closing word of thanks, Professor Vicki Cummings, head of the university’s School of History, Archaeology and Religion, noted in particular the efforts of Dr Abdul-Azim, the Centre’s Deputy Director, in organising the event.

  • Hanan Issa explained that the title alludes to Prophet Moses’ encounter with the mysterious man of knowledge. See the Qur’an, Surah al-Kahf.
