The Greater Manchester Council of Mosques’ statement on the violent attack by a police officer on family,
Date: 26th July 2024
*Subject: Urgent Advice Against Protest at Manchester Airport*
As-salamu alaykum,
Many of you may have seen the call for a protest tomorrow, Saturday 27th July, at Manchester Airport. We at the Greater Manchester Council of Mosques urge our community NOT to attend this event.
The origins of this protest are unclear, and we are concerned about potential negative repercussions which may provoke further hostility and Islamophobia.
The assault at Manchester Airport was a grave injustice that must be addressed. As a Muslim community, we must respond with dignity and uphold the highest standards of our religion.
The Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have suspended the officer involved, and a criminal investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is underway and assurances have been provided by the IOPC today. We also have assurances from the Mayor’s office and the GMP that appropriate measures are being taken.
Given these developments, there is no need for a protest. Disrupting Manchester Airport will only serve to divide us further and provide ammunition to those who wish to see our community in a negative light.
Our community has done exceedingly well in protesting peacefully and lawfully to date. Your actions have demonstrated our commitment to justice and have upheld the integrity of our religion masha’Allah (by God’s will).
We now urge you all to avoid protesting at Manchester Airport. Let us not disrupt the travel plans of others inshaAllah (God willing).
Jazakum Allah khair.
