31 March 2026 “What you don’t name isn’t yours”

Report of a speech by Turkeye’s Director of National Intelligence Organisation, Ibrahim Kalın, at the STRATCOM summit, 2026:

Kalın stated that one of the fundamental problems of the Islamic world, including Turkey, for many years has been its lack of awareness of its own story, and continued:

“What you don’t name isn’t yours. A story you don’t name isn’t your story. Even when you use your own words using someone else’s grammar, you’re not using your own language. You’re only tiring your own words within another linguistic universe, using someone else’s syntax. However, you need to simultaneously construct your own syntax, grammar, and semantics. Trying to squeeze words into that syntax doesn’t offer you a better, more authentic, or more realistic means of expression. What you don’t tell the story of doesn’t go beyond being an event. Events only become lasting narratives when they are turned into stories.”

Kalın added that they will continue to protect and liberate the mind and heart against all the attacks of dark enlightenment, capitalist consumption models, and all the distortions of exhibitionist culture.

Kalın stated that they would remain vigilant against attempts to create enemies and would thwart their schemes, saying, “As Turkey, we will continue on our path without separating knowledge from truth, truth from existence, power from right and justice, and story and narrative from meaning and direction. Our fundamental effort and endeavor is to tell our story in a universal language, but by realizing and understanding that our story is not just the story of this group, this faction, this region, this city, but also the story of our entire geography, of all humanity, and to share it with everyone who has the heart, mind, and ears to listen to us. Therefore, we will build, tell, and share our story so that our story is enriched by the stories of others.”
