On 25th January 2025, delegates from MCB’s affiliate network will assemble to cast their vote at the 27th Annual General Meeting for elected office bearers and National Council members for the 2025-2027 term.

Every two years, the MCB conducts an election for the post of Secretary General and Deputy Secretary General. An elected official can stand again, but only for one further term. The delegates also elect further members to the National Council, which is the closest the British Muslim communities have to a broad-based, multi-ethnic, non-sectarian debating and consultative chamber.
The MCB has three types of corporate affiliation, that determine the number of delegates with voting rights at the annual general meetings: ‘national bodies’ (those with a branch structure across the United Kingdom e.g. FOSIS that has ISOCs across universities) – 3 delegates; ‘regional bodies’ (those with a branch structure in an area e.g. the Lancashire Council of Mosques) – 2 delegates; local/specialist bodies that are based in one town or city and not a branch of some larger structure (e.g. a mosque or charity and also not-for-profit educational institutions, social enterprises etc) – 1 delegate. A call is made to national and regional affiliates to ensure a gender balance in their representation – there needs to be a minimum of 6 women on the National Council.
The delegates assembled on 25th January 2025 will elect a 42-person National Council from the registered delegates for a 2-year term comprising:
- The Secretary General (SG)
- The Deputy Secretary General (DSG)
- 28 elected members, at least 6 of whom should be women
- A further 12 members, one from each of 12 geographical zones (10 in England and Wales, plus one from Scotland and Northern Ireland respectively).
The Election Commissioner, Khalid Sofi, will be conducting in-person, online and TV hustings for the SG and DSG candidates.
