Jamila Sherif writes, “Shahed Saleem’s ‘I was born here’ tapestry installation, set under the dramatically ornate 15th century Torrijos ceiling at V&A East Store House is an absorbing and thought-provoking experience. We were privileged that the artist, Shahid Saleem, who is an old family friend and multi-talented, architect and author, joined us for an artist-led tour.

The vibrant panels depict and link dark themes such as the ‘purity of blood/limpieza de sangre’ policy of the Inquisition and the UK government hostile asylum seeker/refugee policy. These are set under the set under the magnificent 15th century Torrijos ceiling.

These textile pieces provide a powerful expression of and commentary on the history, politics and narratives of exclusion. Shahed has masterfully woven links between the history of the expulsion of Muslims and Jews from Spain during the ruthless 15th century Reconquista and Inquisition and the current UK political climate of anti immigration and far-right rhetoric.”
